Topoi. Revista de História is a peer-reviewed scientific journal that publishes various types of original texts: articles, essays, interviews, Portuguese translations of prominent articles in foreign historiography, and critical reviews in a continuous publication format (since 2024). We accept contributions on an ongoing basis through the website https://revistas.ufrj.br/index.php/topoi/issue/current. Topoi is an open access journal, providing free access to all the material produced and made available by it, as well as free submission and publication of texts.

EVALUATION OF TEXTS SUBMITTED TO TOPOI

Manuscripts are subject to prior approval by the journal’s Editorial Committee, which takes into account the suitability of the text for the editorial project and the quality of the journal. Once approved by the Committee, the article is evaluated by at least two anonymous external reviewers, using a double-blind peer review system. In view of the requests for changes by the reviewers and the associate editor responsible for the text, more than one round of evaluations may be carried out. Final acceptance depends on the reviewers’ recommendation, the author(s) making the necessary adjustements and the final approval by the Editorial Committee.

Reviews, essays, translations of documents and interviews are the responsibility of the associate editors, which makes the use of reviewers optional. Likewise, translations of texts already published in a foreign language are subject exclusively to approval by the Editorial Committee. It is important to note that translations of articles previously published are not supported by SciELO; in this case, the text will be published normally by Topoi, but will only be made available on our website.

Authors must disclose any potential conflict of interest, including political and/or financial interests associated with the research. Likewise, the committee also asks reviewers to indicate to us any conflicts of interest in relation to the text to be evaluated, which may lead to the replacement of the ad hoc reviewer. After the manuscript has been evaluated, if approved, the author may send the journal information about the institution or funding agency that supported the research culminating in the published work, so that the information can be conveyed in a final acknowledgements section in the text.

The average processing time for a manuscript, from submission to final decision, varies between 2 and 4 months. Operating on a continuous flow system, we aim to publish the approved texts in the same year of submission (this may be extended to a maximum of one and a half years from submission due to editorial procedures).

Copyright

Revista de História is licensed under a Creative Commons CC BY 4.0 International license, which means that authors retain the rights to their publications in the journal and are authorized to reproduce them, in whole or in part, as long as the original publication is duly acknowledged.

Intellectual Property and Terms of Use

All data, interpretations and opinions contained in the works published by Topoi are the responsibility of the authors, as is the accuracy of citations and references. The journal operates according to the guidelines of the Creative Commons CC BY 4.0 International license.

The journal encourages its authors to disseminate published manuscripts in institutional repositories and academic or personal social media, stimulating the circulation of knowledge.

Preprints

Topoi currently reserves the right to reject manuscripts deposited on preprint servers, as a way of preserving the anonymity of the authorship in the evaluation process.

Peer review process

Topoi. Revista de História operates under a double-blind review system, preserving the anonymity of authors and reviewers in order to guarantee the integrity of the manuscript review process. The review is divided into acceptance, acceptance with major revision, acceptance with minor revision and rejection.

The editors involved in the processing of each approved article are mentioned in the published texts.

At the end of each year, the journal publishes on its website a list of the reviewers who contributed their opinions to bring to the public an original and high-quality material.

Open data

Topoi encourages the sharing of data and methods used in the article, either through proper referencing so that interested parties can look at the same sources or research path, or through public repositories. Such repositories may be institutional (such as databases, interviews, images, manuscripts, archives of various natures) or those present in the List of repositories for depositing SciELO research data.

Authors may also express their willingness to share data when directly contacted by interested parties.

Fees

Topoi. Revista de História does not charge any fees for submission, publication or access to the works it publishes.

Policy on Conflict of Interest

A conflict of interest may be personal, commercial, political, academic or financial in nature. Conflicts of interest may occur when authors, reviewers or editors have interests that may influence the preparation or evaluation of manuscripts. When submitting a manuscript, authors are responsible for acknowledging and disclosing financial or other conflicts that may have influenced the work. If there is, even potentially, a conflict of interest, the author(s) must inform this in a signed document attached to the submission platform. For more information, see: Disclosure of Financial and Non-Financial Relationships and Activities, and Conflicts of Interest.

Authors also have the possibility of disclosing conflicts of interest regarding potential reviewers, which will be accepted by the editors.

Adoption of similarity checking software

All manuscripts submitted to Topoi are subject to investigation using the Plagius program, which verifies the similarity of texts, and refinement of the information obtained from search engines.

Adoption of software using Artificial Intelligence resources

Topoi does not use any artificial intelligence tool software, nor does it accept its use in text construction. An essential part of the dissemination of historical research, the author’s personal style and the power of the presented narrative are considered important elements in the evaluation of the works.

Sex and Gender Issues

The editorial team of Topoi. Revista de História supports the set of DEIA (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility) principles. We seek a policy of sex equity not only in the composition of our editors, but also in that of our reviewers.

ORGANIZATION AND FORMATTING OF MANUSCRIPTS

It is recommended that authors, before submitting their work, check whether all of the items listed below are included, since texts that do not strictly follow the journal’s editorial standards will be returned to the proposers even before peer review.

1) The contribution must be original and unpublished (except in cases of translation, of course), and must not be under review by another publication. The Editorial Committee reserves the right to investigate cases of double submission or plagiarism for submitted articles. It is important to note that Topoi does not publish excerpts from dissertations or theses; such works must undergo a rewriting process so that they are not understood as self-plagiarism.

2) Submitted texts must not contain any indication of authorship or cover letters. Manuscripts may include material previously published by the author(s), provided that it is clearly indicated, with full references, and that the submitted article brings a significant original contribution. Self-references should be used sparingly.

3) Submissions should be sent in Microsoft Word format files. If they contain photographs, illustrations, tables and/or graphs, they should be inserted in the body of the text. Tables and graphs are numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals and headed by title, with the sources duly cited in a caption aligned to the left. Images, in JPG format, have captions beginning with the term Figure and numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals, with the sources duly cited (author, name of the work, date, collection location, dimensions, material description or other necessary information). When submitting the article, the author must also separately attach the images and tables in good resolution on the Open Journal Systems platform. It is the responsibility of the authors to obtain authorization for publication of any images protected by copyright.

4) The works must be typed in normal font Times New Roman 12; justified alignment; standard tab (1.25 cm) at the beginning of paragraphs; 1.5 line spacing (do not use any type of “before” and “after” spacing, nor “multiple” line spacing or any other type other than that specified here); A4 size page; top and bottom, right and left margins, 2.5 cm.

5) Quotations with more than three lines are highlighted from the text, without quotation marks, composing a paragraph with a 1.5 cm indentation on the left margin, normal font Times New Roman, 11, single line spacing. Quotations with less than three lines are included in the body of the text, between quotation marks, in normal font.

6) Epigraphs must be aligned to the right, with a 7 cm indentation, font 11, single line spacing. The referencing follows the standard (AUTHOR’S SURNAME, year, p. XX). The use of italics should be restricted to words and excerpts in a foreign language, as well as the title of works cited throughout the text.

7) Quotations in a foreign language must appear translated; the original must appear in a footnote, with information about the authorship of the translation. In the case of an in-house translation, the standard “Free translation by the author” is used. When a quotation in a foreign language appears in an explanatory note in the footnote, it must also be accompanied by its translation in the same note.

8) Topoi uses explanatory footnotes, numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals. The notes appear at the end of each page, in normal Times New Roman font, size 10, single-spaced, justified.

9) Bibliographical references must appear in the main body of the text, following the author-date system. Example: (CASSIRER, 2001, p. 10).

10) References to documentary sources (archival documents, interviews, verbal information) should be fully provided only in footnotes, avoiding the use of Ibid. and op. cit. In other words, documentary sources do not constitute a separate field within the references.

11) Complete bibliographical references should be listed at the end of the text, in alphabetical order. Only references used in the text should be listed, following the models exemplified below. In case of doubt, the most recent version of ABNT standards is always preferred.

ARTICLE SUBMISSION

12) The authors of articles submitted to Topoi must have PhDs. If the article is co-authored, all authors must have completed their PhD and not have a recent supervisory relationship.

13) Articles must have between 40,000 and 60,000 characters with spaces, including footnotes and references.

14) The sections of an article, in order, are as follows: title in Portuguese, title in English, abstract, keywords (5) separated by semicolons, abstract, keywords, text and bibliographical references. It is recommended to use bold subtitles to make reading more dynamic. A line of space should be left between the previous paragraph and the subtitle, and no space between the subtitle and the beginning of the following paragraph.

In the case of an article originally written in a foreign language, the article should begin with the title, abstract and keywords in the language of the article, followed by the title, abstract and keyword in Portuguese.

15) The abstract must be presented in a single paragraph with a maximum of 10 lines (700 to 1,050 characters with spaces), accompanied by 5 keywords. Abstract and keywords follow the same specifications. A good abstract contains the theme, spatial and chronological delimitation, the main sources and theoretical framework used, the main argument of the article and its conclusions.

16) Funding information will be included only in the final version of the approved text, in order to preserve the anonymity of the author(s).

SUBMISSION OF REVIEWS

17) Review authors must have a master’s degree.

18) Critical reviews must have between 10,000 and 18,000 characters with spaces.

19) The work to be reviewed may have been written in any language and published in any country. Reviews of works published in Brazil no more than two years ago, and of works published abroad no more than four years ago, will be considered.

20) The book reviewed must be situated in one of the various fields of contemporary historiographical debates, thus justifying its publication in a History journal.

21) Reviews must be the sum of a brief description (parts, chapters, etc.), a historiographical balance (situating the work in its analytical current and dialoguing with other works) and a critical appreciation of the work itself. In this sense, every review must have a title that indicates the analytical objective of the reviewer.

22) In addition to the title (in Portuguese and English), reviews must present the complete bibliographic reference of the work analyzed, just below the title in English. Reviews do not contain abstracts or keywords. Explanatory notes may be used in these texts sparingly. Bibliographical references must appear in the main body of the text, following the author-date system. Example: (CARVALHO, 2011, p. 397). Complete bibliographical references should be listed in alphabetical order at the end of the text.

23) The reviewer and the author reviewed should not have a relationship of supervision.

SUBMISSION OF TRANSLATIONS

24) Translations should have between 40,000 and 60,000 characters with spaces, including footnotes of a strictly explanatory nature and references. In the case of documents, a presentation of the source and its relevance is important. In the case of unpublished articles in Portuguese, it is suggested that prior contact be made with the journal’s secretariat in order to verify the feasibility of publication.

SUBMISSION OF INTERVIEWS

25) Interviews should have between 40,000 and 60,000 characters with spaces, including footnotes of a strictly explanatory nature and references. The submission of interviews must be accompanied by the authorization of the interviewee(s).

RULES FOR BIBLIOGRAPHIC REFERENCES (LISTING AT THE END OF ARTICLES)
